About us

He kupu mō mātou

The Tūrangi Volunteer Fire Brigade responds to emergencies in the wider Southern Lake Taupō area. This includes the Tūrangi township and nearby settlements of Motuoapa, Waitetoko, Tokaanu, Pukawa and Kuratau. We have over 30 members who volunteer with us, ensuring that our local community and surrounding areas are protected 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

However, we do more than just respond to emergencies. In addition, we are leaders in the “prevention first” strategy, educating our community in all aspects of fire safety, as well as attending and advocating at local community events.

Our fire safety initiatives include Early Childhood Centre and School visits, Marae visits as part of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Marae Fire Safety Initiative, Home Fire Safety Visits and smoke alarm drives in our community.

We work alongside Hato Hone St John, New Zealand Police, Philips Search & Rescue Trust (Greenlea Rescue Helicopter),  Land Search & Rescue, Taupō District Council, Civil Defence, New Zealand Defence Force, Department of Conservation, N.Z. Forest Managers, Genesis Energy and Safe Tūrangi.
